Modal force and flavor #

This file defines the vocabulary of modal typology. A modal force is a quantificational strength, necessity, weak necessity or possibility, ordered by strength; a modal flavor is a source of modality, epistemic, deontic, bouletic or circumstantial ([Kra81b]); and a modal item pairs a form with the force-flavor pairs it can express, the representation of a modal's meaning in [IGST26]. The temporal perspective and orientation of [Con02] locate a modal claim in time.

A modal force is a quantificational strength. Weak necessity, ought and should, lies between necessity and possibility ([vFI08]); whether it quantifies universally over a narrower domain ([vFI08]), compares alternatives ([Rub14]) or predicates of a plurality of worlds ([AJ22]) is open ([AJ26]).

Forces are ordered by strength: a necessity claim entails the weak necessity claim, which entails the possibility claim.

The classical dual exchanges necessity and possibility. Weak necessity has no settled possibility counterpart ([AJ26] §2.4) and is sent to possibility.

Necessity and weak necessity quantify universally, the concord class that separates them from possibility ([Zei07]).

The classical force of a force, on the two-point scale of necessity and possibility along which [Nau08] and [Mat16] compare modal systems: weak necessity quantifies universally ([vFI08]) and counts as necessity.

The classical dual is blind to the weak–strong distinction.

The double dual of a force is its classical force: dualizing twice closes weak necessity up to necessity.

A modal flavor is the source of a modal claim: an epistemic or a circumstantial modal base, or a circumstantial base ordered by what the law requires or what someone wants ([Kra81b]); teleological modality, ordered by goals, counts as circumstantial.

A force-flavor pair is one point of the modal semantic space of [IGST26], which has two forces and three flavors; weak necessity ([AJ26]) and bouletic flavor ([Kra81b]) extend the space to twelve points.
