Heim (1994): Comments on Abusch's Theory of Tense #

This file formalizes the implementation that [Hei94a] gives [Abu97]'s sequence-of-tense analysis: tenses are time variables whose distinctive content is a presupposition, attitude verbs quantify over the world–time pairs compatible with the holder's beliefs, and the Upper Limit Constraint is the presupposition (16) that no tense denotes a time after the local evaluation time, the distinguished variable 0 rebound by the abstractor in Comp. LF is the fragment of the paper's logical forms and Def its presuppositions under the tense entries (4) of Sections 1 and 2, so that the calculations of Section 2 are theorems: the presuppositions of the de dicto past under a past (20), of the simultaneous (29) and free (30) construals of John believed that Bill was asleep, and the four presuppositions of the double-access (38) through res-movement and time-concepts (33), with the consequence that the res concept must overlap the utterance time and so cannot be backshifting. Section 3's zero affixes < and ¬< carry the ordering presuppositions instead, Def', and the Tense Licensing Condition TLC with the definition (67) of "in the domain of" licenses (50), (51), (56), (63) and (65) and excludes (57), (62) and (66).

(20): the de dicto past under a past presupposes, at every doxastic alternative of the holder, that the described time precedes the utterance time, (i), and does not follow the alternative's time, (ii).

                            theorem Heim1994a.def_simultaneous {T : Type u_1} [LinearOrder T] {V : Type u_2} {D : Type u_3} {A : Type u_4} {W : Type u_5} (M : Model V D A W T) (c : Context W T) (x : A) (v : V) (g : Assignment T) (w : W) :

(29): with the lower past bound from Comp, the Upper Limit Constraint is innocuous and only the lexical presupposition of PAST remains, that every doxastic alternative time precedes the utterance time, footnote 23.

                            theorem Heim1994a.def_free_coindexed {T : Type u_1} [LinearOrder T] {V : Type u_2} {D : Type u_3} {A : Type u_4} {W : Type u_5} (M : Model V D A W T) (c : Context W T) (x : A) (v : V) (g : Assignment T) (w : W) :

(30): with the lower past free and coindexed with the matrix tense, the Upper Limit Constraint projects the presupposition that the holder located himself at or after the matrix time.

                            theorem Heim1994a.def_res {T : Type u_1} [LinearOrder T] {V : Type u_2} {D : Type u_3} {A : Type u_4} {W : Type u_5} (M : Model V D A W T) (c : Context W T) (x : A) (v : V) (g : Assignment T) (w : W) :

(32): res-movement of the lower past. The context's concept yields the res at the holder's world and time, and the Upper Limit Constraint on the trace requires the concept to imply simultaneity or anteriority across the holder's alternatives.

                            theorem Heim1994a.not_def_res_of_precedes {T : Type u_1} [LinearOrder T] {V : Type u_2} {D : Type u_3} {A : Type u_4} {W : Type u_5} (M : Model V D A W T) (c : Context W T) (x : A) (v : V) (g : Assignment T) (w : W) {s : Reference.Index W (NonemptyInterval T)} (hs : s ∈ M.dox x w (g 1)) (h : s.time.Precedes (c.concept s)) :

A concept that locates a later time at some alternative, as "the next time the lights go out" does, fails the presupposition of (32).

The four presuppositions of (38): (i) the believing time precedes the utterance time, (ii) the res overlaps it, (iii) the concept does not follow the alternative's time at any doxastic alternative, and (iv) the concept yields the res at the holder's world and time.

                              theorem Heim1994a.overlaps_of_def_doubleAccess {T : Type u_1} [LinearOrder T] {V : Type u_2} {D : Type u_3} {A : Type u_4} {W : Type u_5} (M : Model V D A W T) (c : Context W T) (x : A) (v : V) (g : Assignment T) (w : W) (h0 : g 0 = c.time) (h : Def M c (doubleAccess x v) g w) :
                              (c.concept (w, g 1)).Overlaps c.time

(ii) and (iv) together: the concept, at the holder's actual world and time, overlaps the utterance time, so that "she is pregnant today" is reportable by (38) on the same day only.

                              theorem Heim1994a.snd_lt_of_def_doubleAccess {T : Type u_1} [LinearOrder T] {V : Type u_2} {D : Type u_3} {A : Type u_4} {W : Type u_5} (M : Model V D A W T) (c : Context W T) (x : A) (v : V) (g : Assignment T) (w : W) (h0 : g 0 = c.time) (h : Def M c (doubleAccess x v) g w) :
                              (g 1).toProd.2 < (c.concept (w, g 1)).toProd.2

With (i), the res must outlast the believing time: its end lies strictly after the end of the believing time, as the day of a "today" or the duration of a pregnancy does.

                              theorem Heim1994a.not_def_doubleAccess_of_backshifting {T : Type u_1} [LinearOrder T] {V : Type u_2} {D : Type u_3} {A : Type u_4} {W : Type u_5} (M : Model V D A W T) (c : Context W T) (x : A) (v : V) (g : Assignment T) (w : W) (h0 : g 0 = c.time) (hf : ∀ (s : Reference.Index W (NonemptyInterval T)), (c.concept s).Precedes s.time) :
                              ¬Def M c (doubleAccess x v) g w

A backshifting concept, one whose value precedes its argument as "a year ago" does, cannot satisfy (i), (ii) and (iv): (38) can never report such a belief.
